• Toledo Bend Lake borders Texas and Louisiana. Toledo Bend Lake is a 205,000 acre lake with over 1,200 miles of shoreline, which offers fishing, camping, hiking, and outdoor activities on a lake surrounded mostly by undeveloped land, which is mostly timberland and much of that in Sabine National Forest.

Take a stroll around the Center City Park and end the day with a picnic under the pavilion. Enjoy walking the trails in a family atmosphere with a playground, lake, fishing pier and horseshoe pit nestled in a piney woods forest. For camping enthusiasts, there are several camping locations throughout Shelby County with swimming, fishing, horseback riding area and boating activities available.

• Higher education is in the heart of Shelby County with Panola College - Shelby Regional Training Center and Shelby College Center. Shelby Regional Training Center offers educational opportunities through the Industrial Technology program, which is designed to prepare students for a career in an industrial environment. Students are able to focus on welding, hydraulics, refrigeration, electrical, safety or business courses. The programs include laboratory training using state-of-the-art instruments, materials and techniques employed by the industry. Shelby College Center is a two-year community college that offers technical and vocational programs in Nurse Aide, Vocational Nursing, Office Systems, Cosmetology, and Computer Information Systems in addition to academic classes. If a 4-year university is preferred, Stephen F. Austin State University located in Nacogdoches is only thirty minutes away.
