The crown jewel of Shelby County is nestled on the downtown square in Center, Texas. The 1885 historic Shelby County Courthouse has experienced a complete restoration. Styled after an Irish castle by architect J. J. E. Gibson, the Courthouse now serves as a Visitor's Center. From the Shelby County Museum to historic sites and markers, from spectacular landscapes on Toledo Bend Lake to wildlife areas in the national forest, Shelby County offers something for everyone. A walk around the Historic Downtown Center Square is a memorable one with a variety of shopping, art galleries, an antique shop with a quaint sandwich shop inside, and a restored, state-of-the-art movie theatre.

- Toledo Bend Lake borders Texas and Louisiana. Toledo Bend Lake is a 205,000 acre lake with over 1,200 miles of shoreline, which offers fishing, camping, hiking, and outdoor activities on a lake surrounded mostly by undeveloped land, which is mostly timberland and much of that in Sabine National Forest.

Designated primitive campsites available, outdoor recreation consists of wildlife viewing, horseback riding, and hiking operated year round by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department under license agreement with Sabine River Authority.

- Higher education is in the heart of Shelby County with Panola College - Shelby Regional Training Center and Shelby College Center. Shelby Regional Training Center offers educational opportunities through the Industrial Technology program, which is designed to prepare students for a career in an industrial environment. Students are able to focus on welding, hydraulics, refrigeration, electrical, safety or business courses. The programs include laboratory training using state-of-the-art instruments, materials and techniques employed by the industry. Shelby College Center is a two-year community college that offers technical and vocational programs in Nurse Aide, Vocational Nursing, Office Systems, Cosmetology, and Computer Information Systems in addition to academic classes. If a 4-year university is preferred, Stephen F. Austin State University located in Nacogdoches is only thirty minutes away.
